I own a Craftsman YS 4500 lawn mower with a Kohler Courage 20HP model # SV600S. I have owned for 2 years. I just replaced my battery, it was dead, and gave it a oil change. I mowed a couple times around the yard and it just stopped running. I checked the fuel line, the fuel filter is clean. Gas will run to the carberator(sp?). The air filter is clean. Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
You have debris in the carb float bowl and it has blocked the fan\in fuel jet in the throat of the carb. These engines came with both Nikki and Walbro carbs on them. They both have the solenoid on the bottom. You have to remove the float bowl and clean out the float bowl AND the jet / orifice that is located in the area where the bowl solenoid is installed. You can clean the orifice most of the time by breaking off a toothpick and using the BLUNT end. What ever you do.... DO NOT poke a toothpick into the hole of the orifice. It will break off and you will be no better off than you are now. Make sure that you clean off the off solenoid plunger and face. You can test the solenoid by applying 12VDC to the positive terminal and grounding the other one. I use the battery of the mower and a short piece of wire is necessary. You should feel it "click" as you apply voltage and the plunger should recede. If you get the polarity wrong you won't hurt it just reverse the leads. If this solenoid does not work or the plunger is stuck in the extended position the motor will never get any fuel. Once you resolve the debris and / or solenoid problem and your sure the orifice is clean (use carb cleaner also) it should run just fine.
As for the seat switch issue. Either the switch has failed or the switch is out of adjustment. If is up to you if you want to correct the problem. Personally seat switches are a good thing but usually they do the exact opposite of what yours is doing. (I.e. they fail in the open position and it won't start.) As long as your aware of the dangers of operating it without a functioning safety switch it is no big deal unless you have terrain that has steep slopes and you use the moder there. Also if you have kids that use the mower.. I would probably get it fixed.
Should you need parts you can enter your model number on the http://www.searspartsdirect.com site and find your seat switch there.
If you need more help in the future I will also need your model number. Feel free to ask questions anytime.
